The Scottish Day for Life falls on The Feast of the Visitation
The Scottish Day for Life falls on the Feast of the Visitation – May 31st - when Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was with child. At their meeting, John the Baptist, the child in Elizabeth's womb leapt for joy, and Elizabeth cried out: "Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb."
Below you will find a meditation by Sr Roseann Reddy – Co-ordinator of the Cardinal Winning Pro-Life Initiative
This is a remarkable feast in its simplicity and beauty. A feast of great joy, a feast of faithfulness and wonder. It has much to teach us. We are so familiar with the main event, with the meeting of these two great women, that it can be easy to miss the array of other happenings surrounding that event, which are also worthy of our reflection.

MORE than 2,000 babies have been 'saved' from abortion by a controversial scheme set up by the late Cardinal Thomas Winning to persuade women to keep their child.
The Pro-Life Initiative, which marks its 10th anniversary next March, has revealed that it has dealt with a total of 2,102 mothers, each of whom has received prams, clothes, toys and cots totalling hundreds of pounds in exchange for carrying on with their pregnancy.
Mothers as young as 12 and as old as 47 have been assisted, according to organisers of the scheme, who say they have achieved a near 100% success rate with the new mothers, claiming that only two babies have had to go into care.

Evangelium Vitae
In 1995 Pope John Paul II’s Evangelium Vitae was published. It centred on the value and inviolability of human life. Below you will find an extract which is especially written for those who have had an abortion.
'I would now like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion. The Church is aware of the many factors which may have influenced your decision, and she does not doubt that in many cases it was a painful and even shattering decision. The wound in your heart may not yet have healed. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to understand what happened and face it honestly. If you have not already done so, give yourselves over with humility and trust to repentance. The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. To the same Father and his mercy you can with sure hope entrust your child. With the friendly and expert help and advice of other people, and as a result of your own painful experience, you can be among the most eloquent defenders of everyone's right to life. Through your commitment to life, whether by accepting the birth of other children or by welcoming and caring for those most in need of someone to be close to them, you will become promoters of a new way of looking at human life.' Blessed is the fruit of your womb
‘Blessed is the fruit of your womb’ is the theme for this year’s Day for Life – the day dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition.
Day for Life 2007 will mark the 40th anniversary of the Abortion Act in England, Scotland and Wales, the 10th anniversary of Cardinal Winning’s Pro-Life Initiative in Scotland, the 30th anniversary of Cura in Ireland and the 30th anniversary of the Life Care and Housing Trust in England and Wales. It will fall in Scotland on 31st May 2007, in England and Wales on 1st July 2007 and on 7th October 2007 in Ireland.
Day for Life was initiated by the late Pope John Paul II, to encourage the Catholic Church worldwide to celebrate the sanctity of life. In Ireland, Scotland and England & Wales, the Bishops' Conferences work closely together each year. For 2007, they have chosen 'Blessed is the fruit of your womb' as the theme.

Day for Life Prayer
We invite all visitors to this website to pray using the Day for Life prayer:
We thank you, Lord, for the Gift of Life.
Every human life is your gift to the world.
Each person is unique, with a task you have entrusted to them alone.
Help us always to promote the basic rights of all, and to recognise that we are all parts of One Body, dependent upon one another, and called to share a common life.
Amen.
